Cage Fitness – Getting your butt kicked in 30 minutes

Posted by cagefit On August - 31 - 2010

MMA fitness training cage14Did my first Cage Fitness workout earlier today. First thoughts – damn glad I took Friday off.

This is a picture-perfect example of HIGH intensity interval training. The basic premise is a wide variety of exercices, done one right after the another, in 5 minute “rounds” with a minute rest between.

5 rounds, 5 rest periods = 30 minutes of pain and fun.
Each round consists of 6 exercises done for 45 seconds, and a 7th done for 30 seconds.

The only equipment they have is a training bag that has webbing handles spaced on two sides and near the top. It is about 3 feet tall, and weighs probably 30-40lbs.

Just about every exercise is something you may have done before, but it has an MMA twist.

The rounds were broken up by general exercise type, and it went so fast that a lot of the middle is a blur.

Posted by cagefit On August - 28 - 2010

MMA fitness training 10 0419 cagefitness 72dpiORLANDO, Fla., April 22 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — Nine-time Welterweight Champion, Matt Hughes, has endorsed and tested the next big fitness craze for women and men – Cage Fitness. Hughes is a big proponent of fitness. In fact, every year he travels to Capitol Hill and meets with government officials to talk about the importance of health and fitness. Now, Cage Fitness will be added to his talking points.

Cage Fitness is a complete fitness system that is based on the structure of a championship MMA bout. It gives people a total body workout during the course of five, five-minute rounds.

Since MMA athletes are in incredible shape, Cage Fitness sought to replicate these workouts by creating this fitness program.

“Unlike many other fitness programs, the real value of Cage Fitness is that you get a full body, muscle toning, cardio workout in only 30 minutes. To top it off, it has the reality training of Mixed Martial Arts; it’s fun and exciting and best of all – there are no partners and no injuries,” says Hughes.

Who Is Matt Hughes?

Posted by cagefit On August - 21 - 2010

Biography & Testimony

Matt Hughes is the 9-time World Welterweight Champion of the UFC. With a record of 44-7, Matt has traveled the world and has become a household name amongst mixed martial arts fans. He has proven time and time again that ‘a country boy can survive.’ However, it hasn’t always been like that for Hughes. You see, Matt comes from humble beginnings. MMA fitness training biopic01
Matt was born and raised in Hillsboro, a small town with a population of 4,500 that is located in south central Illinois. As youngsters, he and his twin brother Mark spent most of their time on the family farm playing and learning the importance of hard work. Matt often remembers being ‘volunteered’ by his father to help family friends on their farms and still recalls his dad driving home the principle that ‘You never take advantage of someone else’s misfortune.’ Matt and Mark’s participation in sports was quite limited while in junior high. As a matter of fact, their junior high sports career only included the interschool wrestling tournament (Mark beat Matt in case you were wondering) and a couple of weeks of 6th grade track. The Hughes boys were needed during the fall and spring to help around the farm and, thus, had to hang up their spikes for work boots once the spring planting season began.

Sources: Faber Out Until November

Posted by cagefit On August - 9 - 2010

MMA fitness training Former WEC featherweight champion Urijah Faber might not grace the cage again until November.

In July, Faber, arguably the promotion’s most popular star, withdrew from his bantamweight debut bout against Takeya Mizugaki, which was scheduled for WEC 50 “Cruz vs. Benavidez” on Aug. 18 at the Palms Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. Faber, suffered a knee injury in training that didn’t require surgery, said his MMA Inc. manager Mike Roberts.

The 31-year-old California native was tentatively expected back in September to face Mizugaki in the re-scheduled bout. However, sources close to both fighters’ camps indicated that the fight could be pushed to November or even December on account of Faber’s rehabilitation.

Faber’s impressive 13-fight win streak was snapped in November 2008, when he lost the title to durable American Top Team product Mike Thomas Brown. Faber has gone 2-2 in the WEC cage since then, and dropped a unanimous decision to featherweight champion Jose Aldo at WEC 48 last April in Sacramento, Calif.

4 Matches to Make After UFC on Versus 2

Posted by cagefit On August - 6 - 2010

MMA fitness training Before any of you ask, Jon Jones’ next fight should come against someone a rung or two better than Vladimir Matyushenko. There, problem solved.

Now onto more nuanced matters, as the non-headliner outcomes of UFC Live 2 “Jones vs. Matyushenko” have set the table for some interesting stories. In the interest of giving UFC matchmaker Joe Silva a breather, here are exactly which fights should come next for the winners on Sunday at the San Diego Sports Arena.

Yushin Okami vs. Alan Belcher

A detached retina remains one of the scariest injuries possible for an athlete, but it appears as though Belcher will make a full recovery. While his UFC Fight Night 22 main event with Demian Maia fell by the wayside, a future UFC Fight Night or UFC Live headliner against Okami would be equally intriguing, as Belcher’s high-volume style could help along Okami’s slow crawl towards becoming an offense-first fighter.

It would be just as interesting to see how Belcher handles Okami’s constricting clinch and vastly underappreciated boxing skills. Everything moves towards building a legitimate title contender, and the winner of this matchup could find himself just one eliminator fight away from challenging for the belt.

UFC on Versus 2 Bonuses

Posted by cagefit On August - 3 - 2010

MMA fitness training The UFC issued $40,000 postfight bonuses Sunday following UFC on Versus 2 in San Diego, according to multiple reports.

Takanori Gomi earned the “Knockout of the Night” bonus after flattening Tyson Griffin with a right hook in the first round. The win was Gomi’s first in the UFC, and it also marked the first time Griffin has been stopped.

“Submission of the Night” went to Charles Oliveira. The debuting Brazilian tapped Darren Elkins with an armbar 41 seconds into their prelim bout.

“When I put in the triangle, it was already done,” said Oliveira, who used the triangle to set up the armbar finish.

Mixed Martial Arts Weight Training

Posted by cagefit On August - 2 - 2010

MMA fitness training brianjoy 88Many men and women beginning their MMA careers already have some sort of sports background, and therefore have probably already been in the gym for years. Because of this background, many people who begin training for MMA find themselves doing it wrong!

They will get in the gym and train just as they always have and add more cardio, but this will not help them in an MMA fight. Weight lifting is purely anaerobic, and cardio is stricly aerobic. An MMA fight will mix both anaerobic and aerobic conditions at the same time, so combine anaerobic and aerobic exercises for the best training.
